Supporting Sustainable Tourism

PLANED has been involved in the development and promotion of sustainable, rural tourism for over ten years.
It adopts an area based approach which balances the need to increase visitor spend, throughout the year, with the need to protect and enhance the local culture, heritage and environment.

In 2002, with the founding of PLANED time was taken to review SPARC's activities in the field of tourism and to make recommendations for ways that achievements could be carried forward. This was done with the assitance of the Tourism Company Ltd and is documented in 'SPARC/PLANED Tourism Review & Strategy 2002'.

The recommendations made in the Tourism Company report have now been refined and a revised set of strategic objectives have been agreed by the PLANED Tourism Working Group* for inclusion in the up-dated PLANED Business Plan (2004-6):

Key Objectives:

  1. To enable and encourage local people and businesses in Pembrokeshire to identify opportunities for gaining more benefit from tourism and to provide on-going structures for local people to work together to address them.
  2. To support, or undertake, and publicise product and market research studies to assess the potential and feasibility of new tourism products identified by groups of local people, including businesses.
  3. To assist local people, including businesses, in the implementation of project that enhance the distinctiveness of their area and its appeal to visitors and residents.
  4. To encourage and assist groups of existing and potential tourism enterprises and other stakeholders to improve the environmental, social and economic sustainability of their businesses and of tourism in Pembrokeshire.
  5. To support the research and development and market testing of selected tourism products based on the natural environment, culture, language and heritage of the area and which encourage more sustainable forms of tourism. To publicise the outcomes of market testing as appropriate.
